60's Drag Racing Video

Gassers (I was really into the Willys coupes!), Early Funny Cars, some Stockers, Rails, and more, taken when I was just a kid. Most are from the NHRA Nationals in Indy, some from Great Lakes Dragway, and from US 131 in Martin, Michigan. The Hemi Under Glass is a hand-out, not an original photo.

I saw the Ford ...
I saw the Ford Comet (GOLDFENDER) run at the Grand Bend Dragstrip in 1965. It was impressive at the time. It was billed as a Ford factory experimental car. I went home from the day at the drags and painted my CCM? bike the same colour as Goldfender,,,,hey I was a kid...LOL

It was all about ...
It was all about traction. The tire technology wasn't there in the 60's so the cars were raised in the front to transfer weight to the rear wheels. Besides the high front end, engine and driver setback was used to accomplish this. As the tire technology improved in the 70's the? focus was on aerodynamics.

Wow, seeing Ohio ...
Wow, seeing Ohio George Montgomerys 33 willys gasser was a real time warp.? He lives about 8 miles from me here in Dayton, Ohio and is somewhat of a local icon.

I also remember ...
I also remember watching many of those at the dragways in Detroit! It was a BLAST to grow up in the motor city, btw Milt Shornack an icon, had his garage across the street. My older brother hung out there and learned a lot. My brother eventually raced for Dick Jesse, then Royal Pontiac, then for Pontiac Motors? and Jim Wangers, driving the Geeto Tiger GTO's. So many memories. I also was an avid photog, and if I could only find mine I'd share them also. Thanks again! George

A mixture of east & ...
A mixture of east & west coast. @ 0:59 you've got "Dyno" Don Nicholson with his 427 SOHC Ford powered funny (before he added a 6-71), @ 3:14 you have "Ohio" George Montgomery. At one? point George went to the Ford "cammer" for power. @ 3:34 you have, arguably, the most famous AA/GS car of all time, "Stone-Woods & Cook" with Doug "Cookie" Cook behind the wheel. And, @ 5:50, one of the two strongest SoCal AA Gasers in 1968; the Kohler Bros. (the other was Shores & Hess) ~ both with Chevy power
